Are your Hole Cards Really a Secret?

Since the AbsolutePoker online cheating scandal, online cheating has become a hot topic in the Internet poker realm. The hub of the drama was not necessarily a dishonest poker player. It was more so, for lack of better description, a “computer geek” who set out to prove that the system could be beat. Maybe “hacker” might be a better word. He basically wanted to prove to senior management it could be done after they renounced the possibility that an opponent’s hole cards could be revealed.

As a member of the Kahnawake Mohawk Canadian tribe, who considers “fair play” a top priority, AbsolutePoker acknowledged the breach and declared that all money would be refunded (which amounted to about half a million dollars taken from one party, plus even more money from other injured parties). What’s even more annoying is the online poker predator didn’t even attempt to cash out any of the fraudulent winnings.

The good news is whatever loophole that led the AbsolutePoker.com employee to view his opponents’ hole cards has since been amended.

“See your Opponents Hole Cards” Software

On the same note, there is an Internet scam out there (imagine that) that claims to offer a software that allows pokers players to view their opponents hole cards. Not that any honest online poker player would ever stoop to such a level, but the idea is enticing. Don’t fall for it. First of all, the program does in fact work… if you can manage to get all the opponents at your table to download the software as well.

Imagine sitting at a table at your favorite online poker site. You are playing against seven other avatars from all over the world, some of them may not even speak the same language as you, and you have an undetermined amount of time with these same exact players. Now try talking every single one of them into downloading the software before you or they get knocked out.

If you do manage to somehow accomplish this feat, then there are even further steps that must be taken in order for the software to reveal their hole cards to you. In other words, the other player(s) would have to be in on the secret. You’d have more luck typing in the chat box, “Why don’t you all just tell me your hole cards?”

So, the verdict is, if a sales pitch offers the ability to “See Everyone’s Hole Cards,” it’s a hoax. Furthermore, most reputable poker sites have multi-million dollar cheating detecting systems that monitor every hand played for suspicious activity such as a player always making the right play, so there’s virtually no way for this to happen at any given online poker table.

What about Bots?

Despite the fact that it is virtually impossible for players to see their opponents’ hole cards, it is not a guarantee that your hole cards aren’t being revealed, but not to or by humans. Bots can see other bots hole cards and communicate with each other. While human collusion is a mild problem, bot collusion takes the dilemma and multiples it exponentially.

Bot software is poker melanoma. A bot will multiply until it is no longer profitable to play. Bots eliminate the bad players, which is bad because without the weak players, the institution of online poker would crumble. Most respectable poker websites realize this as a potential problem, and out of respect for their loyal customers they go to great lengths to protect them from bots, but without a more dependable answer to this security problem, bots will continue to reproduce. Furthermore, since bot software is even equipped with the ability to play human-like, they are very hard to detect.

One such attempt to impede poker bots is captchas. These are the text boxes many companies now use that ask users to type in a randomly generated text code. Bot software users have found their way around this. By simply having a human sit there and type the codes in, the bots can maintain their status. Captchas are only put into implemented when the stakes get high, and bots usually start and often stay at low-stakes to remain inconspicuous and because there’s only so far they can go before they are playing against themselves.

Conclusion

If the forces behind online poker do not attack this virus head on, there will be adverse effects on the game as we know it. Even with cutting edge research and execution of some sort of solution to this problem, the hackers will always be one step ahead. We all would like to believe that the average online poker player is an honest guy or gal who enjoys and partakes in fair play, and for the most part, we are. There’s a sense of camaraderie between poker players (when they aren’t sitting at a table together anyway).
Only time will tell what the future holds for this institution and community of cardsmen and cardswomen. Poker is controversial and online poker is not without its fair share of scandal, but nothing that’s any fun ever is.

The 2006 Tournament of Champions featured a $2,000,000 prize pool and 27 of the top players in the World Series of Poker competition.

9 came from the 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event, 12 came from the winners of the World Series of Poker Circuit Tournament Main Events that have been held throughout the year and six additional players who received exemptions were invited to the competition. It is a freeroll tournament for those who will be playing. So this means that the 9 from last year’s World Series of Poker final table were champion Joseph Hachem along with Steven Dannenmann, John Barch, Aaron Kanter, Andrew Black, Scott Lazar, Daniel Bergsdorf, Brad Kondracki and Mike Matusow (who was last year’s Tournament of Champions winner). The 12 from the WSOP Circuit Tournament Main Events are Gregg Merkow, Chris Ferguson, Vinnie Vinh, Thang "Kido" Pham, Chris Reslock, Daniel Negreanu, Abraham Korotki, Darrell "Gigabet" Dicken, Jeffrey King, John Spadavecchia, Peter Feldman and Clint Baskin. The mystery six additional players who received sponsorship exemptions are Phil Hellmuth Jr., Mike O’Malley, Doyle Brunson, Mike Sexton, Sarah Strom and Gus Hansen. So this event had all the ingredients needed to be very hot. And it was filmed by ESPN so you can see it in the future. The prize to the winner is $1,000,000.

For Day 1 the blinds started off at $25/$50 with 90 minute levels. Tournament play began at 12:35 p.m. with each player having 10,000 chips each. Action got off to a solid start as Abe Korotki was the first to go when his pocket 5’s couldn’t hold up to the full house Daniel Negreanu produced. On a side note, Mike Matusow promised to wear tape over his mouth the entire World Series if Chris Ferguson shaves his head. No word on any response from Chris Ferguson. He was too busy sending Phil Hellmuth Jr. to the rail with his pocket A’s. Negreanu eliminated both Joe Hachem and Steve Dannenmann on the same hand. And Kido Pham with pocket Q’s said good bye to Scott Lazar (A K) when the board showed 8 7 5 4 5, giving Pham two pair. Day 1 ended around 11:45 p.m. with 10 players making the final table cut.

On the second day, play began at 1:00 p.m. for the 10 who sat down at the final table. Once the tournament officials raised the chips of everyone 10x and the blinds as well, eliminations began taking place as Andrew Black sent Gus Hansen home in 10th place when Andrew’s pocket 9’s held up to Gus’s A K. Gus was soon followed by Daniel Bergsdorf in 9th and Kido Pham in 8th. Chris Ferguson left in 7th when his pocket 6’s were overcome by the pocket 8’s of Darrell Dicken after the board showed no more help to either player. But the victory was not for long as Darrell Dicken was sent packing in 6th place, courtesy of WPT announcer Mike Sexton. Next one out in 5th was Andrew Black (K 9) after his all-in bet was called by Mike Matusow who held pocket K’s after nothing else helped either player. Then Mike Sexton helped Chris Reslock away from the table in 4th position. Mike Matusow who won this event last year, ended up going out in 3rd place, capping an excellent level of performance this tournament. This left Mike Sexton and Daniel Negreanu alone for the heads up battle that lasted 6 hrs and 45 min.

This was a very interesting heads up when you consider that one World Poker Tour champion, Daniel Negreanu, ended up playing against a person who has made a career watching and studying every hand the champion has played in WPT competition. But someone had to win. The hand of victory went as follows, Sexton limped in and Negreanu raised which was followed with a re raise from Sexton. Negreanu calls and the flop shows 10d 8d 4s. Negreanu went all in holding Qh Jh which was immediately called by Sexton who was holding….pocket A’s. Turn card was an A, river was an 8c giving Mike Sexton 3 of a kind and the championship!

What made this win the icing on the cake for Mike Sexton is that he created the Tournament of Champions in 1998 in order to promote the sport. The victory marks Sexton’s second WSOP bracelet. He won the Seven Card Stud High Low event in 1989.

When you play sit and go’s you have to go into the mindset of making first place each time. You can’t rely on just making 2nd or 3rd place if you want to make a stable income playing. You have to gun after first each time and here is why:

1st place = 50% of the prize pool
2nd place = 30% of the prize pool
3rd place = 20% of the prize pool

Now as you can see 1st place pays almost 3 times as much as a third place victory.
